Tenor

Rodrigo Carreto

  • The Portuguese tenor Rodrigo Carreto is a rising presence on the international opera and concert stage, recognized for his "stylistic clarity and expressive depth". Currently based in Zurich, he was a laureate of the 11th edition of the Le Jardin des Voix academy (2023/24), a milestone that led to his debut at the BBC Proms, Teatro alla Scala, and Lincoln Center, as well as the Romanian Athenaeum, National Auditorium of Music in Madrid, and Palau de les Arts in Valencia. Praised by Scherzo as a "magnificent" performer with a voice that is "flexible, melodious, and full of nuance," he is establishing himself as a sought-after interpreter of Mozart and the principal tenor works of the Baroque.

In the 2025/26 season, Rodrigo makes his debut at the Drottningholm Opera as Eurimedes in Telemann’s Orpheus under Francesco Corti and tours South America with Les Arts Florissants led by William Christie. On the concert stage, he performs Mozart’s Requiem with the Gulbenkian Orchestra under Stephanie Childress and the Galicia Symphony Orchestra under Roberto González-Monjas. He also performed as the arias in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with Gli Angeli Genève at Victoria Hall and with Evangelist and arias with PhilZuid under Enrico Onofri. Further notable engagements included Handel’s Messiah with the Oviedo Filarmonía, Britten’s Fourteen Folk Songs with the Münchner Symphoniker, and an appearance in Mysliveček’s Adamo ed Eva in Palermo. His recent performances as the Evangelist in Bach’s St. John Passion with Andreas Scholl and Divino Sospiro earned extraordinary acclaim, with critics noting his "impeccable diction" and "narrative ability that sustained the tension of the story".

  • The 2024/25 season saw Carreto join Les Arts Florissants for an international tour of over 30 performances of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen—in which he was particularly noted for his role as Autumn—appearing at the Philharmonies of Paris and Luxembourg and the Lucerne Festival. Other highlights include Monteverdi's Vespers conducted by Paul Agnew, Lully's Te Deum with the Divino Sospiro Orchestra, and English Divine Hymns with William Christie at the Lanaudière Festival.

The 2026/27 season is anchored by a series of major Passion performances across Europe, including the St. Matthew Passion with the Irish Baroque Orchestra and a highly anticipated return to the Gulbenkian Orchestra for the same work. Other highlights include the Bomtempo Requiem with the Orquestra RTVE, Campra’s Requiem at the Royal Chapel of Versailles, among other highlights to be announced.

Selected as one of the "Bach Young Soloists 2021" with Collegium Vocale Gent, Rodrigo toured for two seasons under Philippe Herreweghe. While he is a regular presence in the haute-contre repertoire with Ensemble Correspondances, his versatility extends to Mozart’s C minor Mass, Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle, Mendelssohn’s Paulus and Die erste Walpurgisnacht, and Haydn’s The Creation. An avid recitalist, he performs song cycles by Finzi, Schubert, Schumann, and Debussy. He has extensive international experience across Europe, the USA, and China, performing with leading ensembles such as La Capella Nacional de Catalunya (Jordi Savall), La Cetra Barockorchester (Andrea Marcon), and the J.S. Bach-Stiftung (Rudolf Lutz).

Rodrigo completed his Master’s degree with distinction at the Zurich University of the Arts under Scot Weir. He continues to refine his artistic development with Peter Harvey and Jeremy Ovenden, having previously worked with icons such as Barbara Hannigan, Emma Kirkby, and Peter Kooij. His discography includes Les Maîtres de Notre-Dame with Ensemble Correspondances, Zelenka’s masses with Collegium 1704, and J. J. Santos’ Responsories under Enrico Onofri. He has also recorded a song cycle by Joly Braga Santos with pianist Pedro Costa and a Missa by A. Puzzi with Ensemble Bonne Corde.

  • His voice - beautiful, flexible, melodious, well-tuned, and full of nuance - was present and fully up to the task throughout the entire work. Remember that name: Rodrigo Carreto, he was magnificent. (...) The St John Passion turned out to be wonderful. The most applauded—and ovationed—was the tenor Rodrigo Carreto.

    Scherzo

  • Hence, the text is paramount, and with it, the narrative carried by tenor Rodrigo Carreto. The Portuguese singer highlighted the word, shaping it with a great variety of nuances and making his sung phrasing of a German text fully intelligible. He stood out especially in his extended recitative, vividly describing Christ’s suffering.

  • Let it be said from the outset that the concert would already have been worthwhile for the magnificent performance of the Portuguese tenor Rodrigo Carreto-singing the role of the Evangelist and taking on the tenor arias (...) But let us not allow what was said earlier to overshadow the true protagonist of the recital, the tenor Rodrigo Carreto, and the audience clearly acknowledged this with the beginning of applause during the aria Ach, mein Sinn - in a Passion performance where traditionally there is no applause until the end - and with a great ovation at the close of the concert.

    Scherzo

  • Rodrigo Carreto proved to be a tenor with a warm emission and clear diction, very expressive — for instance in the “Mors stupebit”, with a slightly theatrical touch. His intervention in the “Domine Jesu” maintained that same line of natural brightness.
